INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Individual psychotherapy is a collaborative effort where you and I engage in conversations about yourself and your life. It’s a process by which we together examine your thoughts, feelings, experiences, actions, and relationships. We can explore these to better understand them, accept them, or work to change them where necessary. This work can lead to better life adjustment and satisfaction.

Many people neglect their mental well-being because of stigma or shame. They think talking about their problems is weakness. They are wrong. In fact, talking about your hopes, fears, stresses, sadness, and relationships can be the bravest thing you can do for yourself.

I’ve helped people with

  • transitions or life adjustment (i.e. becoming an adult, lifestyle changes, work/school)

  • personal growth

  • relationship issues

  • identity issues

  • race, racism, & discrimination

  • men’s issues, manhood, & masculinity

  • self-esteem & self-confidence

  • anxiety & stress

  • grief & loss

  • trauma

  • depression

  • emotional well-being

  • life satisfaction

Even if you don’t have clinical conditions or symptoms, individual therapy can help you learn more about yourself and others and teach you how to manage your life more effectively or meaningfully. This type of personal growth can help you overcome obstacles that have kept you from reaching your goals and becoming the person you want to be.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss how I might be a useful resource to help you live a more fulfilling life.

COUPLES/MARITAL THERAPY

Are you and your significant other having the same argument over and over again? Do you feel no matter how often you communicate with each other, you don’t feel heard or understood? Are there problems with trust, intimacy, differences, fidelity? Through couples or marital psychotherapy I can help you and your partner work together to address your relationship problems and identify solutions or strategies so you both are more satisfied with the relationship.

I offer this service to people who are married or have partners, those living together, considering future commitments, and those who are currently dating. As with individual psychotherapy, we would typically meet once a week.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION AND MENTORSHIP

I also offer the opportunity to supervise and mentor young clinicians as they develop and hone their skill as psychotherapists and navigate early career decisions. My clinical supervision style goes beyond case review and "how to's" to explore the relational and intersectional dynamics, as well as transferences/counter-transferences of each therapy case. I emphasize the integration of theory and practice as well as the therapist's own personal history in deepening one's clinical work.

My mentorship covers similar areas, including how one integrates becoming a clinician with other aspects of their identity, such as their race or gender or, being a parent or spouse. During mentoring meetings, we may talk about training, career, work-life balance, and general experience/adjustment as a clinician. As a black psychologist, I particularly like mentoring fellow clinicians of color, who are entering the field and navigating the different spaces in which they live.

CONSULTATION & Presentations

I offer consultations and presentations to individuals, agencies, organizations, colleges and universities. These services can be tailored to your specific needs and goals. Topics have consisted of stress management, vicarious trauma, suicide prevention, adjusting or transitioning to college, self-care activities, cultural and diversity dynamics, and crisis response. I have worked with college students, parents, young adults, and professionals.
